Boy Scout Troop 562 of Woodridge, IL

Welcome to Our Website!

Image

Our Troop meets at Goodrich school in Woodridge on Thursday evenings, and serves Woodridge and the surrounding area. We meet throughout the year; at the school during the school year and elsewhere in the summer, and are active throughout the entire year with camping, hiking and other activities. We have a very active program with a full calendar of interesting activities geared toward excitement, fun and growth.

Our Troop is strongly focused on the patrol method , and is a youth-run organization. We see the role of the adults in the Troop as one of helping the Scouts to learn how to become leaders; to be responsible and to plan and execute their own activities. With this in mind, our leaders supervise the process with the Scouts, and help the Scouts to learn how to run the activities themselves. Our supervision provides the safety net for the Scouts while allowing them enough room to learn through their own successes and mistakes. We are very character based , and see Scouting as an ideal program for helping boys learn to become the sort of men that others will respect and look up to.

Please explore our website and see what we have been up to. You will also find information about scouting programs, skills, knot tying, gear and other things of interest to scouts.

Come see us some time!

Sugar Creek Canoe Trip

We started this canoe trip at 10:15 a.m. and we canoed for 10 hours. The reason for that was that the course was 15 miles long.  It was an adventurous trip because a person fell out of their canoe, another canoe was swamped, and three paddles were lost in the river, but later found. Some people saw an eagle catch a fish.  The weather was beautiful. On Sunday, we packed up and played jump the boarder.  It was a great trip.

Well, another great week of summer camp...

We had 15 scouts at summer camp this year (out of a total troop membership of 16)! The weather was perfect throughout the week and we had a great time. The scouts earned a ton of merit badges (33 completed and a mess of partials) and over 30 T-2-1 requirements were met and signed off.  Mr. Collins did a great job heading up the Taste of Madron entry of ribs and barbequed Cornish Hens and the scouts did a nice job of representing the Troop at the water carnival on Friday. The OA Tap Out ceremony was very cool as well. Thanks again to the leaders who spent  time at camp to make the week possible and thanks to our drivers for getting us to and from the camp.

Father's Day Canoe Campout

Happy Father's Day! Our canoe trip this Father's Day was very nearly a no-go due to the high water in virtually every river in the Midwest. We had to change our original plan of going to Sugar Creek this June (although we will go there in August, if the creek doesn't rise) and made a last minute change to Kankakee River State Park, where the water was low enough to canoe in. We rented canoes from Reed's canoes and did a 12 mile trip down the Kankakee River. The trip was very nice and the scouts seemed especially to enjoy lunch in the canoes (tied together into a giant raft, to float downstream as we ate). A Troop Alumni Eagle joined us for the trip, Chris Gerding, and told the scouts stories about his days in the trip a few years ago. The scouts managed the canoes well and the older boys worked well with the novice canoeists, to keep the boats (more or less) pointed downstream.

Blackwell Campout

Image Our Blackwell campout was very interesting. On Saturday, we woke up and went fishing. We only caught one fish in over three hours! After fishing we went on our ten mile bike ride. It was very fun, but we got very sore. As we were sitting by the campfire in the early evening, a thunderstorm broke out over us and we all sheltered in our tents or under the EZ-UP.

Devil's Lake; April 2008

Image We arrived at Devil’s Lake at about 11:30 p.m. We were tired, but set up camp and got to bed by 2:00 a.m.  On Saturday, we took a hike through the hills and bluffs. As tiring as the hike was, we still managed to get some fishing in around 8:00 p.m. On Sunday, we packed up and went to the International Crane Foundation, the only place in the world with every species of crane – 15 species in all!
